Ernest Harcourt Ely

Sergeant E. H. Ely, son of Mr. G. H. Ely (Harcourt), has been killed, in action in France. He sailed with the first Expeditionary Forces in October, 1914, and took part in the memorable landing at Gallipoli. Soon after landing he was severely wounded, and for some time was in hospital in Malta. He returned to Gallipoli again, and was wounded the second time, being sent to England for treatment. When the Australians were sent to France .Sergeant Ely was amongst them. After the battle of Pozieres he was reported missing. Extensive inquiries by the Defence department failed to find any trace of him. Last week the Rev. Mr. Ditterich was instructed to notify the parents that Sergeant Ely had been killed in action in July, 1916.
